Teacher - Elementary 2025/26 School Year — Santa Barbara Unified School District

Title: Elementary Teacher
Reports to: Site Principal
Salary Schedule Range: Depends on Experience (From Class I, Step 1 $66,022.11 to Class III, Step 13 $110,995.70) — salary schedule available online in the Human Resources section of the District website. Annual stipends for a Master's and Doctorate degrees. Benefits: Eligible to participate in District health, vision, dental and term life insurance.

Purpose of Position

Under the immediate direction of the Principal, is responsible for the academic, social and psychological growth of students in the classroom. Collaborates with school personnel, parents and community agencies to provide quality instructional programs and to perform other duties directly related to this position description.

  • Implement classroom instruction and student supports based on student achievement data.
  • Review the results of assessments and implement interventions to assure that all students meet grade level proficiencies.
  • Support the achievement of all students, with a heightened focus on socio-economically, culturally, ethnically, racially and linguistically diverse student populations.

Student-Centered

  • Carry out the school's program expectations to meet the needs of all segments of the community.
  • Provide opportunities for students to see their own background and experiences through the curriculum.
  • Be aware and responsive of the individual needs of each student and family.
  • Communicate important classroom information to all students and families in the classes.

Culture and Climate

  • Establish and maintain high expectations for achievement and implement systematic supports using MTSS so all students can achieve standards.
  • Participate in family engagement programs.
  • Carry out the school's student behavior policies with an emphasis on addressing disproportionality of the system's impact on specific student groups.
  • Assume responsibility before, during, and after school hours for the health, safety, and welfare of students.
  • Maintain the classroom as a safe space for students.

Functions

  • Provides learning experiences in reading, language arts, social studies, pre-reading, mathematics, science, art, physical education, and music to students, using the adopted course of study.
  • Instructs students in citizenship, basic communication skills and other elements of the course of study.
  • Develops and uses instructional materials suitable for verbal, auditory and visual instruction of students.
  • Provides individual and group instruction designed to meet individual needs for enhancing self-image and to help students transition to school.
  • Differentiates instruction.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to achieve effective participation in activities.
  • Evaluates academic and social growth of students, and keeps appropriate records.
  • Communicates with parents through a variety of means and holds parent conferences to discuss progress and interpret the school program.
  • Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude and learning problems.
  • Maintains professional competence through participation in professional learning activities provided by the District and/or self-selected growth activities.
  • Assesses student test performance results and develops lesson plans and instructional materials for the class, including individualized and small group instruction as necessary.
  • Performs basic attendance accounting and business services as required.

Non-Essential Functions

  • Evaluate each pupil's development in the course(s) being taught and prepare necessary reports.
  • Create an engaging environment through displays, bulletin boards and activity centers.
  • Supervise students in out-of-classroom activities during the workday.
  • Participate in curriculum and other developmental programs with the school and/or district.
  • May plan and coordinate the work of aides, teacher assistants and other paraprofessionals in the kindergarten area.

Working Conditions & Physical Demands

  • Ability to work at a desk, conference table or in meetings of various configurations.
  • Ability to stand and circulate for extended periods.
  • Ability to see and read laws, codes, rules and policies and other printed matter, and observe students.
  • Ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels.
  • Ability to bend, twist, stoop, kneel, run and crawl; ability to reach in all directions.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Moderate to high stress levels; work is predominantly in a school environment with normal climate; occasional adverse weather conditions.

Qualifications

  • Required Qualifications:
    • Possession of a valid California Multiple Subject Credential
    • Bilingual Cross Cultural Language and Academic Development (CLAD or BCLAD) credential, or equivalent.
    • If not fully credentialed, candidate must be willing to enroll in credential program and have at least 18 semester units in the subject area to qualify for a short term staff permit; or must be enrolled in a credential program and be eligible for an internship credential.
  • Desired Qualifications:
    • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
