Position: M&E Specialist - Transforming Lives

Division: Employee or Independent Contractor

Location: Flexible. This person can work remotely from anywhere in the continental US or work from our corporate headquarters in Goleta, CA or our office in Chicago, IL, or any combination thereof. Candidates outside the U.S. will also be considered in a consultant capacity.

Salary: $90,000 - 105,000 annually contingent upon grant funding continuance

CONTINGENCY STATEMENT

This position and start date is contingent upon the continuation of Transforming Lives Through Nutrition grant funding. In the unexpected event that funding is not continued, the position will be reevaluated and the selected applicant will be notified of any changes in a timely manner. Transforming Lives Through Nutrition (Transforming Lives) is a grant-funded consortium uniting three public-health nonprofits, including Helen Keller Intl., Vitamin Angels, and iDE, and has been established to offer an impactful way to improve the nutrition of underserved pregnant women, infants, and young children globally. Transforming Lives is a one-year grant with the potential to apply for continued funding in subsequent years. The current scope of work is written as a five-year plan. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is funding this work. As part of its humanitarian efforts, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints regularly offers grants to nonprofit organizations that impact underserved populations around the world.


ROLE OR PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

The M&E Specialist will support the the Transforming Lives consortium in enhancing the quality, effectiveness, and efficiency of data collection systems. This includes the design, management, analysis, and interpretation of data to inform impact and learning for Transforming Lives consortium project. Transforming Lives is a grant-funded program implemented in collaboration with Vitamin Angel Alliance, Helen Keller International, and iDE Global with a primary objective of improving maternal and child health by strengthening health and food systems to deliver proven nutrition interventions to women and children The role involves close collaboration with cross-functional teams and across other collaborating organizations, primarily in Africa and Asia, to use data to inform programmatic decision-making and improve outcomes.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The M&E Specialist will be responsible for the following:

  • Support the execution of the Transforming LivesM&E plan through:
    1. Leading the development, refinement and implementation of VA?s data management and consolidation for overall project routine monitoring and evalution processes; and
    2. Conceptualizing and implementing VA data validation process in the project;
    3. Supporting the global Transforming Lives global M&E team with strategy and tool development;
    4. Designing data reporting forms for country teams and partners to ensure reporting needs for Transforming Lives global ME strategy are met
    5. Guiding the integration of Transforming Lives learnings into refinement of VA?s broader M&E approaches.
  • Provide technical assistance to country teams to support the design and implementation of data collection activities implemented through Transforming Lives, including the development of robust in-country data management systems and contributing to the development of research protocols, data collection tools, and analysis plans.
  • Coordinate data collection activities, including training staff, and conducting data quality assurance checks to ensuring data quality and integrity.
  • Support quantitative and qualitative data management, analysis, interpret findings, and prepare reports and presentations for internal and external stakeholders for routine programmatic M&E and implementation research projects.
  • Contribute to the dissemination of research findings through the preparation of manuscripts, reports, presentations, and other publications.

Organizational Relationships

VA operates under a collaborative, matrix management model. The M&E Specliast is supervised by the Technical Lead, Transforming Lives, coordinates his/her activities with other leaders (unit leads from Programs, Marketing, and various contractors) or their designated staff, and interacts daily with a range of members of the VA team. Each VA team member establishes work priorities and ensures that their individual activities are continuing within the context of an established schedule and budget.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master?s degree in public health, development, health economics, or a related field
  • Minimum five years hands-on experience engaged in data management and analysis in public health programming
  • Experience developing and implementing a program M&E strategy in a related role
  • Experience developing data entry forms in ODK and excel for large scale data entry
  • Highly computer literate including proficiency in data management and visualization platforms (e.g. Excel, SurveyCTO, DHIS2, PowerBi ArcGIS, Tableau)
  • Strong quantitative analysis skills (e.g. descriptive and inferential statistics) and demonstrated experience in data collection, cleaning, and management using statistical software (e.g. ODK Collect, Stata, SAS, SPSS, R, etc.)
  • Experience developing data quality assessment procedures and conducting checks
  • Experience working in Africa and/or Asia, with a deep understanding of the context in which we are implementing programs in at least one of the priority regions
  • Ability to perform duties that require very close attention to detail and synthesize large amounts of information effectively
  • Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills, with excellent organizational abilities
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Ability to manage stress, including but not limited to stress resulting from local and foreign travel, large crowds, open spaces, shared office space, and daily activities
  • Ability to remain seated for extended periods of time, including but not limited to prolonged air travel and general job assignments performed at a desk
  • Must have the ability/desire to travel internationally

Preferred (not required):

  • Knowledge of global health and nutrition issues, and prior experience working in low- and middle-income countries in a similar capacity/role is highly desirable
  • Experience in qualitative analysis and data management, using software such as ATLAS.ti, Dedoose etc., is desirable
  • French language skills are a strong plus
